I wrote True Worshipers: Seeking What Matters to God as a follow up to my first book, Worship Matters:Leading Others to Encounter the Greatness of God. My first book was aimed at leaders, but True Worshipers is intended to help people in the congregation understand how to become the kind of worshiper God is seeking. In nine chapters, I cover what I think are some of the basic misunderstandings and challenges Christians face in this area, including: Is worship about giving or receiving? What is the essence of worshiping God? Why is it so important for Christians to gather? What’s the relationship between Sunday worship and everyday worship? How can I sing in a way that brings glory to God? What does God’s presence have to do with worship? A free study guide is available from Crossway.

I wrote Worship Matters: Leading Others to Encounter the Greatness of God primarily for people involved in leading corporate worship, but I’ve been told that it’s helpful for anyone who wants to grow in their understanding and practice of biblical worship.

The book has four parts: The Leader, The Task, Healthy Tensions, and Right Relationships. In the first section I talk about what we love, what we believe, what we practice, and what we model. In part two I unpack my proposed definition of a worship leader: A faithful worship leader magnifies the greatness of God in Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit by skillfully combining God’s Word with music, thereby motivating the gathered church to proclaim the gospel, to cherish God’s presence, and to live for God’s glory. In section three, I describe nine “healthy tensions” that are essential to God-honoring worship. In the last section, I talk about a worship leader’s relationship with his church, his team, and his pastor. The book ends with a chapter written to pastors. C.J. Mahaney edited Wordliness: Resisting the Seduction of a Fallen World. Its six chapters address the topic of worldliness and how it plays out in the areas of media, stuff, music, and modesty. In the last chapter, Jeff Purswell talks about ways God wants us to love the world. I contributed the chapter, “God, My Heart, and Music.” My main point is that listening to music without discernment and godly intent reveals a heart willing to flirt with the world. I also talk about how to listen to music for God’s glory.

I tried to shed some light on “What Happens When We Sing?” The book also includes transcriptions of two panel discussions.

Really good and covered a lot of ground--from broad scope to details. I had a few theological differences with him (but just a half star's worth). There were other parts that didn't pertain to my smaller church situation very well, so I didn't enjoy them much either. All in all: 4 stars.

Some reviews of this book amount to little more than, 'It was too long.' And, I would agree with those, if this book wasn't so cleverly structured and set out, with easily navigated sections, chapter headings, and subheadings. Really helpful book designed for worship leaders. Goes from the depths of biblical explanations of what worship is to the nuts and bolts of everything that goes into leading a Sunday morning service. Bob’s irenic and humble demeanor make the book extremely enjoyable to read and helpful to realize one’s own deficiencies. I am not a musician, but I wanted to read this book to better understand the role music plays on a Sunday morning, and this book certainly helped.

This book helped me see music and worship as bigger and more glorious than just songs on Sunday morning. From tips on how to work together better as a team and model the body of Christ working together, to growing in my biblical understanding of the involvement of emotions and the mind in worship. Excellent book on what it means to be a worship leader in the church. I appreciate Kauflin's emphasis on worship as a way of life and thus the need for personal holiness in a worship leader. Throughout the book, he balances theological/philosophical comments with practical tips. The chapters about 'healthy tensions' were very helpful.

When I was first given this book just over a year ago by our song leader, I wasn't too enthused. It appeared to be a stuffy, boring treatise on using music in a church to worship God. I couldn't have been further from the truth!

I am not a worship leader. I'm a pastor. No, wait - that makes me a worship leader, just not in the realm of music. That's an important distinction to make, and one which Bob Kauflin makes in this valuable book: 'Anyone who encourages others to praise God can be referred to as a 'worship leader.' Worship can involve music, but it can happen without it as well.' Careful thinking like that make this book a treasure-trove of biblical wisdom and practical insight on worship.

This is an excellent book for anyone who desires to think more about corporate worship. While more needs to be said on this subject, this is a wonderful place to start. We need more guys like Kauflin, guys who are gifted musically and have a passion for deep theology. One of the great things about this book is that it can be used by various groups of people who are similar in theology, but whose congregational services may look different. This is an excellent book that focuses around leading the singing portion of a church service. The first two sections of the book (The Leader and The Task) are excellent but somewhat slow going at times due to the extremely theoretical nature to them (although Bob mixes many personal stories and experiences into these sections). This is the second of Bob's books that I've read. His thirty plus years of full time experience as a worship leader definitely comes through here, and the book is littered with practical examples of how to improve our individual and collective worship as the Body of Christ. This goes far beyond singing, but includes every moment of our lives. For my friends who are worship leaders or musicians such as I, this book is worth the time
I wish I would have read this book a few years ago. When I took the role of 'Worship Director' at my church, I admit that I had little idea of what I was stepping into. This book has impacted how I view worship as a whole, how I view my job, how I view my pastor, and how I view my church. I am grateful for the wisdom and truth that Mr. Kauflin has poured into my life through this book.
A privilege to somehow be mentored by Bob Kauflin about worship through his book. I find what he has written here to be relevant and applicable. His experiences in worship has been very helpful in identifying issues faced by worship leaders and members of the worship team. It all boils down to what is in the heart of a man. :)

What a breakthrough book in this area. Bob Kauflin is equally solid as he discusses both the biblical basis for worship/music and the practical musical issues. As a long time worship leader, this is the book I enthusiastically recommend on the topic - get it and read it.

This is an excellent book whose primary focus is on worship in song, and the one leading it. I do not completely agree with a few of his conclusions, but for the most part I think every Christian--especially church leaders--should read this book.

This is a helpful book, written for worship leaders specifically, that I would've benefitted from greatly when I was leading worship during college. I let the worship 'culture' I had seen for years dictate my worship leadership more than Scripture-informed principles. Kauflin gives us a healthy dose of Scripture in this book and 'redefines' worship in broader terms than music allows.

This book proved itself to be inspiring and practical. It is logically structured. Bob Kauflin has also helpfully included illustrations from personal experience and in particular how his own views have been moulded by the years, by the pastors with whom he has served and the Lord.
He has managed to make the application wider than the particular church in which he worships and serves and showed great sensitivity to other traditions.

He doesn't rant. He encourages right relationships first. Bob Kauflin Sovereign Grace Music

Wonderful book! As a member of a Praise Team at church, I would highly recommend this for all church leaders. As a Christian I would say this is a must read for all Christians. While Bob Kauflin is a Worship leader in his church, he explains that worship is not just the worship music in a church service, but the state of our hearts in both corporate and individual fellowship with God. We should be in a constant frame of mind in worship and almost everything thing we do can be an act of worship.
Amazing read! Kauflin’s humble and honest approach to writing about worship music within the church was so refreshing. His godly wisdom shared in this book completely shifted my whole view on music within the church to a more God-honouring approach. I am so thankful for the knowledge and practical tips mentioned. I recommend this to not just the worship team members, but any and every church goer.

“Worship is God's gift of grace to us before it's our offering to God. We simply benefit from the perfect offering of the Son to the Father through the power of the Spirit (Ephesians 2:18). Worship is our humble, constant, appropriate, glad response to God's self-revelation and his enabling invitation. Apart from this perspective, leading worship can become self-motivated and self-exalting. We can become burdened by the responsibility to lead others and can think that we might not be able to deliver the goods. We subtly take pride in our worship, our singing, our playing, our planning, our performance, our leadership. Ultimately we separate ourselves from the God who drew us to worship him in the first place. That's why biblical worship is God-focused (God is clearly seen), God-centered (God is clearly the priority), and God-exalting (God is clearly honored). Gathering to praise God can't be a means to some 'greater' end, such as church growth, evangelism, or personal ministry. God isn't a genie we summon by rubbing the bottle called 'worship.' He doesn't exist to help us get where we really want to go. God is where we want to go. So God's glory is the end of our worship, and not simply a means to something else.
